Recap: LOST 'Namaste' (S5,E9)

The new recruits. Alternate times. Christian Shephard in the cabin. A young Ben Linus with a sandwich. All that and more from this weeks LOST episode. As always, don't read this if you don't want any spoilers!
Namaste
What We Learned
- Jack, Hurley, Kate and Sayid are not in the same time period as the rest of the plane survivors.
- There's a runway on island (built for that occassion?)
- Cesar (whom I don't trust) wants to explore the buildings; while Ben, Sun (folowed by Frank) go into the jungle to get to the other island.
- Sawyer concotes a plan to have Kate, Hurley and Jack at as new recruits (as there is a submarine about to dock). Jack being the dick he is, acts like its the worst plan every. Snarky.
- Sayid wanders into a trap; and Sawyer and Jin has to pretend they don't know him, and lock him up in the "Flame" station with a nerdy, uptight scientist who is designing the Swan station and worries that the "hostile" might have seen the plans and where its going to be built.
- Ben tells Sun that going to the other island is the best chance for her to find Jin - to which she wallops him on the head, leaves him unconcious on the beach, and heads over with Frank.
- The black smoke monster is still protecting the camp, but no one is there -- well, except for Christian Shephard.
- Christian tells Sun that Jin is in 1977 (shows her a picture) and that she has "bit of a journey ahead"
- Look, there's little baby Ethan - which terrifies Juliet (when she hears his name she immediates gives me back to); but his last name changes to "Rom", and his parents last name is "Godsspeed".
- Sayid get a good taste of his own medicine by being treated as a hostile (much as he treated Ben); and sadly there is little Jin or Sawyer can do to inform him of what is going on -- Sayid doesn't even know that its 1977, that Sawyer, Jin, Juliet and Miles have been there for 3 years -- nothing.
- And there's little Ben (the child actor was obviously told to open his eyes freakishly wide) who delivers a sandwich to Sayid.
What We Don't Know
- Why are Sun, John and Ben not in 1977?
- What does Christian Shephard know? Why is he even there on the island? How can he get Sun to 1977 (or is it vice versa)?
- Was the runway built specifically for the purpose of allowing the plane to land? Did Cesar have something to do with that? Will we see him in 1977?
- Is there something strange lurking in the shadows of the cabin?
- Will we ever get more details into the ancient ruins and strange "spiritual" things that overtake people when they enter the temple?
- Why is the smoke monster around -- is he protecting Christian?
- We still don't know why Richard never ages, or when he really got to the island?
Not a great episode, in my mind; but a nice bridge of intrigue. Jack is annoying and now even more petty than I remember and I like seeing Sawyer being more wise, calm and articulate (which just tells me Juliet is perfect for him). What did you think?

Thanks for the summary! I missed a little of it for a phone call, so this helps me catch up.
It was weird to see Sawyer and Jack sorta flip-flop roles (the wise leader and the hothead). I never liked Kate as a character anyway- too inconsistent. So, yeah. The soap opera/love quadrangle will begin again. Fun fun.

I hope it doesn't. Sawyer is actually a better a person because of Juliet; Jack only seems to get worse whomever he's with; and Kate is just as bad. Maybe they'll die. Soon. By the black smoke monster.

I'm really enjoying Sawyer's character development.
Also, I think Richard is Egyptian.

Richard certainly looks the part of being Egyptian -- god-like. He's the master manipulator of all of this?

Christian is Jacob.
Mark my words.

A theory I've been building over the past few seasons -more specifically, since season three, episode five- is that all of the dead people (well, more than _just_ the dead people) we've seen on the island are simply manifestations conjured up by Cerberus (aka: The Smoke Monster). We saw Cerberus again this past Wednesday just before Sun and Frank ran into Christian.
Maybe, Christian really is Jacob because they're both just a subset of Cerberus.
Maybe Rousseau's team wasn't really Rousseau's team after they ventured into the ruins. Maybe they're manifestations of her team brought on by Cerberus. I could continue, but I'll stop here. A person can only use the word maybe just so many times in one comment.
On the Egyptian front: remember, the Dharma Initiative was/is into some pretty fringe areas of science, possibly reproducing ancient legends/lore for kicks. Maybe (sorry, I had to) the Egyptian relics are how the geeky scientists nod to their inspiration. Just a thought.

Some great theories Adam (on the smoke monster). My guess is that the Dharma Initiative studied ancient Egyptian scripts/scrolls to find the island (that pendulum, etc). I really do hope we somehow get a peak into the "Temple" and maybe where the smoke monster is generated (or controlled).
