Recap: LOST 'Some Like It Hoth' (S5,E13)

He see's dead people. And by "he", I mean Miles (of course, you knew that). If the title of this episode seems strange, it is (referencing a hilarious but miniscule exchange between Hurley and Miles). But we begin to learn a tad more of the complexity of how everyone may have ended up on this island. Spoilers ahead.
Some Like It Hoth
In this episode we finally get a glimpse into the intricancies of Miles Straume and his "abilities" (and perhaps where they came from) as well as some timeline placement and paths toward the meaning of each person's place on the island.
What We Learned
- Miles talks to dead people! Wait, we knew that.
- Miles was also once a child, who spoke to dead people. And he's all conflicted and turns into a pierced punk kid and his mom dies and he's very sad...
- Who had that moment that where you went "OH DUH! Dr. Pierre is his dad!", a few minutes before they made it really obvious (with Miles telling Hurley "He's my dad")
- Apparently its common practice to kill off hostiles, as it relates to Dharma building the Swan station.
- While Sawyer is helping Ben become the future leader of the Others, Miles neglects his duties to erase the security tape; which will inevitably lead the demise of their comfortable rouse.
- Roger gets suspicious of Kate and where Ben went (more things closing in on our Oceanic time travelers).
- Dr. Pierre is a jackass.
- Hurley is an awesome cook. He also wrote "Empire Strikes Back" (thus the title of the show).
- Naomi shows up to recruit Miles to go to the island (with Widmore) but then Braum (who is one of the new survivors, remember?) says he's on the wrong side ;"We're on the team that wins".
- The question "What lies in the shadow the statue" is pretty important. Perhaps it's this.
- Daniel comes back, after 3 years gone.

What We Don't Know
- What are these "teams" that Bram speaks of? We know the team of Widmore, is the other team Ben or someone else? Is it Penny?
- Where did Daniel go, but more importantly what did he do (in the 3 years)?
- What exactly is in the shadow of the statue? Is it a riddle or something literal?
- Why haven't he heard about Alvar Hanso in a while? Isn't that who Dr. Pierre works for and the entire Dharma intiative comes from? Is he this other "team"?
Let me know if I missed anything and your thoughts and theories!

What I don't get is how Miles can coexist with his baby self. I thought the reason why dead grown-up Charlotte disappeared in '74 was because she already was there as a child.

I don't think the dead guy was a hostile. He was just a hapless Dharma construction worker who had an unfortunate run-in with electromagnetism.
Dr. Chang as Miles's father has been a pretty popular theory for a while now (all Asians must be related I guess...)
I don't think Charlotte died because she existed at the same time as her younger self... I am not even sure they were in that era yet when she died. I think she died of whatever killed Minkowski.

Yeah, I thought Charlotte died from the many many jumps (which caused some sort of brain anurism)
@Shane: you're right, the bullet hole made me think he was, but he is wearing the uniform that Radzinsky has on. I probably glossed over when Miles told Hurley what the dude said (I've done that alot these days; glazed-over-sleep-head). So I re-watched that bit to get the part where his filling got pulled through his head.
The main part being the secret (they are keeping from everyone) is that their building the Swan station in hostile territory.
Was also nice to see Hank from "Breaking Bad" make an appearance.

Nice Patton Oswald reference. Maybe Hurley is in fact George Lucas.

@the sis: Well thank you, I thought it appropriately tied with the episode.

i thought the *empire strikes back* thing played nicely. when miles started reading the notebook out loud, i got the joke *immediately* and started laughing, to blank stares from my wife.
beyond the whole 'reconcile with your dad' thing, it ties in well with the hurley/miles positions on changing the past: hurley thinks you can, so he's rewriting *empire strikes back* to engineer a *return of the jedi*-less future; miles thinks you can't, so he ridicules hurley's initiative. if *i* were hurley, i'd skip *return of the jedi* and get to work on eliminating episodes I-III.
btw, i submit that LOST be rechristened *Bad Dads.* Jack and Claire's dad? Bad. Sawyer's dad? Kiled his mom: bad. Locke's dad? Bad. Miles's dad? Bad. Kate's dad? Bad. Sun's dad? Bad. Hurley's dad? Originally bad, and still pretty much a freeloader. Ben's dad? Bad. Penny's (and possibly Daniel's) dad? Bad. The sleeper agent must be Jin, because he's the only character with a good dad.

Miles doesn't see dead people though, he even made fun of Hurley for suggesting it. He gets that magical "feeling" thing that shows them their history.

@Joshua: That actually may not be far off (the Bad Dads), it might all come down to how they're linked.
And you should listen to Patton Oswalt's rant on George Lucas, I swear this episode (or the part with Hurley) was a directly a response to it.
@aaron: he feels dead people
