Recap: LOST 'Everyone Loves Hugo' (S6, E12)

I'll be honest. I haven't known what to recap or even say about LOST the last few episodes. Not for lack of things to say, but for lack of nice things to say. It's not because I don't like the episodes either, I do. But I think I'm unsteady or unsure as we tiptoe to the end of what could either be brilliant and poignant or vapid and empty. I'm hoping for the former.
We've been treated to several Flash Sideways events. Kate, Jack, Sayid, Ben, James, Richard, Jin and Sun, and Desmond. And now we get a glimpse of Hugo. But first to sum up what's happening on the island. Not-John-Locke has his army (which includes a willing, emotionless Sayid and fence-staddlers Kate and Sawyer). Jack has assembled his team, with Richard wanting to blow up the plane, Illana wanting to destroy NJL, Sun unable to speak English any longer and Hugo talking to dead people. There's lots of talking but very little action (and honestly, the island scenes are really dragging along — minus the interesting bits with Desmond returning with Widmore and the little experience in the boxhouse), but in the alternative universe, well, things are interesting:
- Hurley is still rich, but one assumes its not through the lottery but by owning the Mr. Cluck Chicken restaurant franchise (am I right, or did I miss something?) He wins and philanthropic award (presented by Pierre Chang — whose name in itself sounds like a french/chinese cuisine franchise waiting to happen). His mom says he needs a girl.
- We see Hurley waiting for a blind date. And Libby appears. But she's not his blind date, she just recognizes him; from dreams and visions — and then she's taken away by Dr. Brooks (whom Hurley knows from the pre-island timeline)
- What Libby said bothers Hurley. He wants to believe her, but can't place where he knows her. So he goes to the hospital and in essence bribes Dr. Brooks to allow him to see Libby.
- Hugo takes Libby to the beach. Libby kisses Hurley and he "flashes" on his reality on the island (with her). And we see Desmond, in a car, watching (in his uber cool sunglasses).
- Desmond then waits in a parking lot, watching John Locke wheel himself through, Ben interrupts his attention briefly (concerned that Desmond might be a "stalker" of students). Then Desmond speeds off towards Locke and RUNS HIM DOWN! Kills him. With a big smile on his face (and keeps driving).
-
Meanwhile ....
- Hurley sees Michael. Michael tells him to not allow everyone to get on the plane.
- Hurley lies to Richard that "Jacob" has told him that they shouldn't blow up the plane, but instead go talk to NJL. Illana and Richard want nothing to do with that. I happen to agree with them — that cannot end up good.
- Illana explodes. Literally.
- Richard gets annoyed.
- Jack, Sun and that Lupidis decide to follow Hurley, even though he lied.
- Sayid shows Desmond to NJL. Desmond is calm and cool. NJL is not pleased (in fact he looks downright nervous).
- Not-John-Locke leads Desmond to the well (the one with the donkey wheel — is Desmond destined to set things in motion yet again? and also, there are more than one of them), and asks him how he cannot be afraid. Desmond says "What's the point in being afraid?" which is the wrong answer because NJL pushes him into the well.
- Oh, and that kid is showing up again, smiling and making NJL all antsy and weird.
- Hurley and the Gang show up to deathcamp of NJL followers — and things are gonna get freaky (probably).
- Jack gives the oddest look at Locke — what's up with that?
That's it. That's about all I can add. I have NO insight into what's happening, other than to think that this "sideways" world is an illusion, a dream, and Desmond is aware of it and trying to wake others up (quite a bit like The Matrix). I think the party that Eloise is throwing will have all the LOSTsies at it, wherein they will have some collective awaking right as Desmond turns the monkeywheel and then we'll get the true, corrected version of time. Or at least something like that.

yes. that look from jack was pretty wtf.
i have a feeling that fakelocke and desmond are going to end up at the bottom of the well together. and that desmond will survive the resulting massive-outlet-of-electromagnetic-energy and fakelocke may not.

You're right Dan. I went back and watched Jack's flash sideways and Hurley talks to Sawyer on the plane about how he's the luckiest guy in the world (and told Arzt about winning the lottery and buying Mr. Clucks).
I'm thinking of making an infographic timeline to see if I can't make any visual sense of all these timeline's and realities ... I'll probably die trying ...

This is the first time that Jack sees "Locke" after his death off the island... I assume that is why he had the strange look.

Also are we certain Desmond kills Kocke dead. As much as as are we sure Locke kills Desmond dead. They both could pull through it... and I suspect they will.

@Renaud I wouldn't be surprised if John ends up in the hospital and Jack does surgery and heals him. Or Locke is dead. Either or neither is possible. Or Locke turns into black smoke and flees for Iceland.
