Review: Its about a horse, in a field and some laywers, maybe

For me, confusion and complication aren't hallmarks of immaculate story telling. Michael Clayton purposefully and unnecessarily throws us into the middle of a story and slowly yet methodically unveils secrets. Secrets about a "lawyer", Michael Clayton who fixes -- and by fixes, I mean uses all means necessary to keep the firms payroll going (lying, covering up, planting evidence, bribery, etc) -- the problems of a large firms clients, but soon finds his mentor is in need of fixing before he destroys the careers of many lawyers while bringing down an entire global corporation. They call him the janitor.

Michael is aptly played by George Clooney, and we quickly discover that he's a smart, in debt, single father with a special ability to argue people into or out of their own decisions. Michael's mentor and friend at the firm, Arthur Edens (played wonderfully by Wilkerson), is in the middle of a mental breakdown, as evidence of him stripping naked during a client deposition. The firms largest client, U-North, is in legal trouble for knowingly releasing cancer-causing chemicals. Throughout the movie we learn more about the underbelly of big corporations legal cover-up of lethal mistakes, lawyers tactical maneuvering to bribe and manipulate, about the importance of taking your mental health medications, how to grimace and scream, and how to distrust lawyers and corporations. Its a good mystery, though not always compelling or satisfying. The performances are incredibly well done. So, if you dislike lawyers, corporations, money, family or Mercedes Benz's and like horses, strange fantasy role-play books and crazy people' then you might like Michael Clayton.
